Professional background

  • Initial contact with Les Wexner
    • From Ch.28 of Filthy Rich by James Patterson (2016):

      Robert Meister: 1985

Robert Meister, the chairman of a giant insurance brokerage and consulting firm called Aon, met Jeffrey Epstein in the mid-eighties, aboard a flight from New York to Palm Beach. Both men were flying first class. Each one thought the other looked familiar. They talked in the course of that flight, and Meister filed the conversation away, only to recall it in 1989. At that time, Les Wexner, who was Meister's friend and a client of Meister's insurance company, was complaining to him about the people managing his money.
Wexner was a billionaire, but for all his wealth, his finances were in a tangle. Maybe Epstein could help. And perhaps Epstein would also be grateful for the introduction. Hard as it is to believe, there's evidence to suggest that Epstein really had spent the last of his Bear Stearns bonus—along with his share of the money he'd recovered for Ana Obregón—and was broke, again, at the time.

      • New York Post, "MEET THE NEW MR. HILTON – PARTY BOY HAS A HISTORY WITH NICKY, BUT SOME PALS QUESTION THEIR FUTURE", 2004/08/17: "SURE, they wed on a whim. But they’re going to give their marriage a shot. That’s what one of Nicky Hilton’s friends said yesterday about the 20-year-old hotel heiress’ quickie Las Vegas wedding over the weekend to New York party pal Todd Meister, 33. [...] Meister has been a friend of the Hilton family since Paris and Nicky were kids, having grown up in their chichi Upper East Side and Hamptons milieu, thanks to his mega-rich dad, Robert Meister, the vice chairman of Aon Corporation, a global insurance brokerage. Todd Meister was a football star at posh Riverdale Country School, then got a business degree at Harvard and established a company in the mid ’90s to invest in Internet startups. They sold the company in 2000; now Todd works as a hedgefund manager." - note that Nicky Hilton later married James Rothschild to become Nicky Hilton Rothschild
      • CBS, "IT and life lessons from the South Tower", 2011/09/08: "Due to maintenance in the 103 floor data center on Sept. 8-9, the data tapes for Aon Consulting ran cleanly and were taken offsite on Monday morning. We were lucky to have those backups as Tuesday was a very different day."
      • Chicago Business, "Aon subpoenaed over Trump Organization insurance", 2019/03/05: "New York’s insurance regulator issued a subpoena to the Trump Organization’s primary insurance broker, a person familiar with the matter said. It came just days after President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney testified to Congress that the president’s company sometimes misrepresented the value of its assets to insurance companies. The subpoena, from New York’s Department of Financial Services, asks Aon Plc for details about its relationship with the Trump Organization and Trump himself, the person said. [...] In a December 2007 deposition, Trump identified an Aon insurance broker named Pamela Newman as one of his company’s insurance contacts. Newman, who didn’t respond to requests for comment, donated thousands of dollars to Trump’s 2016 campaign and the Make America Great super PAC that supported his candidacy, federal election records show. When lenders “see Pam is involved, they feel much more comfortable,” Trump said in a November 2011 television interview that identified Trump as one of Newman’s biggest clients."
  • New York Times, "Home Sweet Elsewhere", 1996/01/11: "Such is the fate of one of Manhattan's largest town houses, a majestic stone mansion at 9 East 71st Street. Possessing some 21,000 square feet, the house was recently the uninhabited domain of Leslie H. Wexner, the founding chairman of the Limited Inc., the retailing company. Mr. Wexner bought the house in 1989 for $13.2 million and lavished tens of millions on renovations, art and furnishings. [...] When asked how long Mr. Wexner had occupied the property, Jeffrey Epstein, his protege and one of his financial advisers, replied, "Les never spent more than two months there." Thus the prorated cost of Mr. Wexner's sejours would appear to have been in excess of a million dollars a day. [...] Visitors described a bathroom reminiscent of James Bond movies: hidden beneath a stairway, lined with lead to provide shelter from attack and supplied with closed-circuit television screens and a telephone, both concealed in a cabinet beneath the sink. [...] Reached in Florida last week, Mr. Epstein said that the house was now his."
  • New York Post, "HOW GHISLAINE ROSE FROM THE ASHES – MAXWELL’S HEIRS BUILDING A NEW BUSINESS EMPIRE", 2000/03/23: "Within a year of her father’s death she was dating immensely wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein. He provided a platform for her return to public prominence and filled the emotional vacuum in her life left by the death of her father. EPSTEIN is an enigmatic figure. Rumors abound — including wild ones about a career in the Mossad and, contrarily, the CIA. Some have said he was once a concert pianist. He seems to deny nothing and admits even less. “He told me he was a spy hired by corporations to find major amounts of money which had been embezzled,” said one of Epstein’s former girlfriends, diet guru and former TV personality Nicki Haskell. “He made it sound very glamorous.” He now runs an investment company, J. Epstein & Co., and the walls of his Madison Avenue office drip with six-figure works of art."
  • Bob Fitrakis, "Wexner's royal connection", 2001/01/25: "Imagine Columbus Alive's surprise last week when Nigel Rosser, a British journalist and reported confidant of the royal family, contacted us to inquire about Prince Andrew's central Ohio connection. Rosser had read two award-winning Alive stories--"The Shapiro Murder File" and "Spook Air"--and wanted to chat about our own Leslie Wexner and his top aide, the mysterious Jeffrey E. Epstein. [...] Rosser's article, published in the London Evening Standard on January 22, described Prince Andrew's recent behavior as "erratic" and "greatly upset[ing]" the royal family. [...] Rosser reported that Ghislaine is a one-time partner of Epstein, "an immensely powerful New York property developer and financier." Other newspaper reports have described Epstein as everything from a concert pianist, corporate spy, math teacher, stockbroker, merchant banker, and globe-trotting businessman. He has steadfastly denied rumors of links to the Israeli Mossad. [...] Epstein "has a license to carry a concealed weapon, once claimed to have worked for the CIA--although he now denies it--and owns properties all over America," Rosser noted."

  • Vanity Fair, "The Talented Mr. Epstein" by Vicky Ward, 2003/03
  • Bob Fitrakis, "The Wexner War", 2003/08/01: "A December 1995 Architectural Digest article and a follow-up 1996 New York Times report detailed the inner sanctum of Wexner’s former Manhattan townhouse, one of the largest in the city.

“Visitors described a bathroom reminiscent of James Bond movies: hidden beneath a stairway, lined with lead to provide shelter from attack and supplied with closed-circuit television screens and a telephone, both concealed in a cabinet beneath the sink,” wrote the Times. The townhouse is now reportedly owned by Wexner’s even more mysterious protégé, Jeffrey E. Epstein.

Epstein, who recently loaned his jet to President Clinton, is usually seen in the company of Ghislaine Maxwell, daughter of deceased publishing tycoon Robert Maxwell. After Maxwell fell or was pushed off his yacht in 1991, it was revealed that he was working for the Israeli government and the Mossad, the Israeli Intelligence service. While Maxwell’s ties to the Mossad are well-documented, Epstein’s connections are less well known. The London Sunday Times quoted a New York social observer describing Epstein as follows: “He’s Mr. Enigmatic. Nobody knows whether he’s a concert pianist, property developer, a CIA agent, a math teacher or a member of Mossad.” New York Magazine claims Epstein is the man who moves Wexner’s billions around the globe."
  • The Guardian, "Happy Birthday Barbara", 2007/05/08: "Even by the exacting social standards of Conrad Black, it was a gathering of quite staggering opulence. [...] Court documents in America have shed new light on an infamous surprise 60th birthday party thrown by Lord Black for his wife, Barbara Amiel, in December 2000 at a cost of $62,869.57. To the ire of shareholders and prosecutors alike, Lord Black only tossed $20,000 into the pot and billed $42,869.57 to his company, Hollinger International, as a "business expense". [...] The richest man in the room was Michael Bloomberg, the financial information wizard turned mayor of New York, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes magazine at $5.5bn. [...] Elsewhere in the room was the flamboyant property developer Donald Trump ($2.9bn) and Donald Lauder ($3bn), the philanthropist son of the late cosmetics tycoon Estee Lauder. [...] Lord Black, who claims he was striking business deals at the event, was surrounded by the Vogue editor Anna Wintour, the Dame Edna Everage impersonator Barry Humphries and a clutch of celebrity wives - including Sir Evelyn de Rothschild's spouse, Lynn, and Henry Ford II's widow, Kate. [...] Birthday girl Barbara Amiel, who once remarked that her extravagance "knows no bounds", chose slightly more heavyweight companions. Her table included the legendary statesman Henry Kissinger, who was a Hollinger director and is now listed as a possible prosecution witness in her husband's trial. They exchanged pleasantries with Donald Trump, the news anchor Peter Jennings who subsequently died in 2005, the former New Yorker editor Tina Brown and Bill Clinton's one-time close adviser Vernon Jordan. [...] On table number one (nearest the opera singer), dress designer Oscar de la Renta passed the time with Robert Maxwell's daughter, Ghislaine, and a prominent New York chat show host, Charlie Rose. [...] Like Lord Black, some guests have since suffered a taste of scandal - Jeffrey Epstein, a mobile phones millionaire on table three, was charged last year with soliciting prostitutes for sex in Florida and, according to lurid newspaper reports from police investigation documents, has highly unusual tastes in massage."

    • "There are obvious curiosities to all of the above names, but several stand out given their backgrounds that tumble into suspicious areas given what we know so far. One is the former Governor of New Mexico, Bruce King, his property, and its history. It turns out Epstein knew exactly where in Stanley, N.M. he was placing his compound and what it meant for all involved. It lies smack in the middle of the governor’s land parcel where 3-term governor King lived from birth to death. Epstein lived there almost exclusively while King was sitting governor. King’s son, the Attorney General, also has a compound there, and plans to also run for governor. Former governor and Bilderberger Bill Richardson is a frequent visitor, as is Alan Dershowitz, accused of raping Virginia Roberts multiple times at the Epstein property."
    • "Stanley N.M. is in Santa Fe County. This area hosts a massive, wide open child trafficking corridor that runs both ways straight into Mexico, its victims including Eastern Europeans, Africans, and more. This area also happens to be a CIA hub, and leads into extensive ties with the infamous Process Church, which also happened to come up in Corydon Hammond’s investigations"
    • "Jean Michael Nihoul was a leading figure in the Dutroux child abuse scandal. Note this excerpt from a Belgian government white paper into the scandal: “Nihoul managed a string of Dutroux’s properties which functioned as pedophilia clubs in various countries, including a sumptuous and secluded villa in the Caribbean at which leading U.S. political figures, governors, and members of Congress could satisfy their pedophile perversions safe from media sleuths.”"
    • "Which brings us to another name in the “black book,” and the controlled history of Courtney Love. Her father was a known producer and supplier of LSD when she was growing up, and also a manager of the Grateful Dead for a time, which directly connects her family to the Laurel Canyon military MKUltra operations of the 1960s. Her mom was a psychotherapist. Love herself has previously written about remembering “people from England coming over,” and taking part in some type of “conventions.” In the insightful writings of Sierra Peterson, who has her own experiences being involved in MKUltra projects and programs, she recounts meeting the infamous spook Jack Sarfatti, who would go on to offer her employment with the CIA:

“One of the people he (Sarfatti) mentioned hooking me up with was Hank Harrison, Courtney Love’s father, who has been accused of domestic abuse and violence by every single member of his family. Jack told me that Harrison is an ‘expert in mind control.’”"
  • New York Times, "$56 Million Upper East Side Mansion Where Epstein Allegedly Abused Girls", 2019/07/08
    • "The townhouse where the financier Jeffrey Epstein is accused of engaging in sex acts with underage girls is one of the largest private homes in Manhattan, a short walk from Central Park."
    • "It also has a heated sidewalk in front to melt the snow during the winter months. On the second floor is a mural that Mr. Epstein had commissioned in recent years: a photorealistic prison scene that included barbed wire, corrections officers and a guard station, with Mr. Epstein portrayed in the middle. “He said, ‘That’s me, and I had this painted because there is always the possibility that could be me again,’” said R. Couri Hay, a public relations specialist invited by Mr. Epstein to a meeting at his home and to view the mural three months ago."
    • "The visitors each said they were greeted by a tall woman who spoke with an Eastern European accent, who led guests up a marble staircase to a study on another floor. At the base of the stairwell, one of the visitors said, Mr. Epstein had placed a chess board with custom figurines, many dressed suggestively — each piece, he noted, was modeled after one of his staffers."
    • "A wall of the study was covered with photographs of famous people, including Woody Allen, and another that Mr. Epstein pointed out was of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia."
    • "During the search of his townhouse on Saturday, investigators seized photographs of nude underage girls, federal prosecutors said. “The alleged behavior shocks the conscience,” Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States attorney in Manhattan, said on Monday."
    • "In 1989, Mr. Epstein’s mentor, Leslie H. Wexner, the founder and chairman of L Brands, the parent company of Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works, bought the seven-story Beaux-Arts home for $13.2 million. At the time, it was the highest recorded sale price for a townhouse in Manhattan.

Mr. Wexner then spent at least that much on artwork — including multiple works by Picasso — Art Deco furnishings, Russian antiques, rosewood tables and doors and a gut renovation of the home. Security devices, including a network of cameras, were installed. A cellar was divided into separate spaces, one for red wines and another for white. The renovation was featured on the cover of the December 1995 issue of Architectural Digest."
    • "Mr. Wexner, however, never moved in; he decided to stay in Columbus, Ohio, where L Brands has its headquarters. But another person did move in: Mr. Epstein. “Les never spent more than two months there,” Mr. Epstein told The New York Times in 1996. [...] Mr. Epstein said in the 1996 interview that the mansion was now his, though the transaction has never appeared in New York City records online. In 2011, he transferred ownership of the property from a trust connected to Mr. Epstein and Mr. Wexner to Maple Inc., a United States Virgin Islands-based entity under Mr. Epstein’s control, according to records. The transfer document, from Nine East 71st Street Corporation to Maple Inc., did not list a purchase price, indicating that it did not involve any exchange of money. A spokeswoman for Mr. Wexner said that he “severed ties” with Mr. Epstein about a decade ago. Erika Kellerhals, a lawyer in the Virgin Islands who handled the 2011 transfer for Mr. Epstein, did not return a phone call seeking comment."
    • "Mr. Epstein also owns a home in Palm Beach, Fla., a 7,500-acre ranch in New Mexico and an apartment in Paris. He also owns Little St. James Island, a private island in the Caribbean, and at least 15 cars."
  • Daily Beast, "I Tried to Warn You About Sleazy Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein in 2003" by Vicky Ward, 2019/07/08
    • "For a man who clearly considered himself a sophisticated ladies’ man (the only book he’d left out for me to see was a paperback by the Marquis de Sade), I thought his journalist-seduction technique was a bit like his table manners—in dire need of improvement."
    • "It became obvious as I was reporting his story that you could essentially divide Jeffrey Epstein’s biography into two themes. One was the hidden source of his wealth—he claimed he’d fueled a lifestyle of vast homes, a private jet, and endless travel by managing the money of billionaires and taking a commission, a story that no one I spoke to believed—while the second mystery was his unorthodox lifestyle."
    • "I also met with respected real estate developer Marshall Rose; the former Bear Stearns chairman Alan “Ace” Greenberg called me; so too did Leslie Wexner, the founder and CEO of The Limited, who trusted Epstein so much he had given Epstein carte blanche to insert himself into both Wexner’s family and business affairs, according to people who saw Epstein’s contract; they all chattered on about Epstein’s brilliantly creative mind, his intellectual prowess—a mental agility that, to put it bluntly, was simply not evident in the many phone conversations he had with me."
    • "Luck did shine upon me that day. I opened the first box, and there was Epstein’s deposition in a civil case explaining in his own testimony that he had indeed been guilty of a “reg d violation” while at Bear Stearns and that he’d been asked to leave the investment firm; it was the nail in the coffin I needed."
    • "What I had “on the girls” were some remarkably brave first-person accounts. Three on-the-record stories from a family: a mother and her daughters who came from Phoenix. The oldest daughter, an artist whose character was vouchsafed to me by several sources, including the artist Eric Fischl, had told me, weeping as she sat in my living room, of how Epstein had attempted to seduce both her and, separately, her younger sister, then only 16. [...] When the girls’ mother learned that Epstein had, regardless, allegedly molested her 16-year-old daughter, she’d wanted to fight back."
    • "I worked through December 2002 like a dog. I worked with three fact-checkers, the magazine’s lawyer; I sifted through everything Epstein threw at me and defused it. We were getting ready to go to press. And then the bullet came. “Graydon’s taking out the women from the piece,” Doug Stumpf, my editor, told me."
    • "It came down to my sources’ word against Epstein’s… and at the time Graydon believed Epstein. In my notebook I have him saying, “I believe him… I’m Canadian.” Today, my editor at The Daily Beast emailed Graydon to ask why he had excised the women’s stories from my article. A Vanity Fair spokeswoman responded: “Epstein denied the charges at the time and since the claims were unsubstantiated and no criminal investigation had been initiated, we decided not to include them in what was a financial story.” But this wasn’t a financial story, it was a classic Vanity Fair profile of a society figure."
  • New York Times, "Jeffrey Epstein Is the Ultimate Symbol of Plutocratic Rot", 2019/07/08: "Over the last couple of months, Ward told me, she’s started going through transcripts of the interviews about Epstein she did more than 16 years ago. “What is so amazing to me is how his entire social circle knew about this and just blithely overlooked it,” she said of his penchant for adolescents. While praising his charm, brilliance and generous donations to Harvard, those she spoke to, she said, “all mentioned the girls, as an aside.”"
  • Salon, "I was a friend of Jeffrey Epstein; here's what I know" by Jesse Kornbluth, 2019/07/09
    • "When we met in 1986, Epstein’s double identity intrigued me — he said he didn’t just manage money for clients with mega-fortunes, he was also a high-level bounty hunter. Sometimes, he told me, he worked for governments to recover money looted by African dictators. Other times those dictators hired him to help them hide their stolen money."
    • "In 2011, in the Daily Beast, Alexandra Wolfe chronicled what happened next:

      > The conventional wisdom among his friends was that Epstein has been victimized by greedy, morally dubious teenage girls and unscrupulous lawyers. "I've never condoned paying for sex, but if the young lady lied about her age it's her own fault," explained one socialite, who along with Wilbur Ross and Leon Black hobnobbed with Epstein at a Southampton movie screening just two months after his release from "community control" in Florida."

    • "Epstein also forged a relationship with Leslie Wexner, the retail titan behind Victoria’s Secret, The Limited and other store chains. He started managing Wexner’s money in the late 1980s and helped straighten out the finances for a real estate development Wexner was backing in a wealthy Columbus, Ohio, suburb."
    • "“Little is known or said about Epstein’s business except this: He manages money for the extremely wealthy,” the Palm Beach Post reported in 2006 after Epstein’s legal troubles began there. “He is said to handle accounts only of $1 billion or greater.”"
  • New York Times, "Jeffrey Epstein Taught at Dalton. His Behavior Was Noticed", 2019/07/12: "In February 1974, Mr. Barr had announced that he was resigning as headmaster, protesting the meddling by the board of trustees, but that he would stay on until the end of the school year. It is unclear whether Mr. Barr hired Mr. Epstein during that time. Mr. Epstein, from Brooklyn, was just 21 when he joined the faculty at Dalton, arriving without a college degree. The school’s student newspaper reported in September 1974 that he was starting that year as a math and physics teacher. [...] The school had new leadership under Gardner Dunnan, who tentatively explored a rollback of some of its strict rules. [...] In the years since, however, Mr. Dunnan has faced allegations of his own inappropriate conduct. A former Dalton student said in a lawsuit that she had been invited to live with Mr. Dunnan at age 14, and had suffered repeated sexual assaults under his care."
    • Daily Beast, "Jeffrey Epstein Dodged Questions About Sex With His Dalton Prep-School Students", 2019/07/12: "Peter Branch was the acting headmaster after Barr’s departure and he may have hired Epstein. Full verification would require access to Dalton’s personnel records, if they still retain them. I put a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request into the State of New York Department of Education and they reported having no teaching license on file for Epstein—this may suggest that he was not planning on a career in teaching. Unlike public schools, it should be noted, a private school like Dalton does not require its teachers to possess a state teaching license or certificate. Update: After publication, a reporter from the Miami Herald kindly provided me with Branch's phone number. When he spoke with me, he noted that he was upper school director before being appointed interim headmaster at Dalton. His appointment began on July 1, 1974 and Barr's contract at Dalton expired on June 30th. Branch does not recall hiring Epstein and he is relatively certain Barr or possibly the head of the Math Department hired Epstein because hiring decisions were typically made in the spring. He also noted that Barr liked to hire unconventional teachers to enhance the educational experience for students at Dalton."

It listed the holder’s residence as Saudi Arabia, they said."

    • "One source who’s done business with Epstein told me that Epstein’s 21,000-square-foot townhouse on East 71st Street welcomed a steady stream of the Davos crowd in the past decade. The source said Bill Gates, Larry Summers, and Steve Bannon visited the house, which has been called one of the largest private residences in Manhattan. “Jeffrey collected people. That’s what he did,” the source said. Gates and Summers did not respond to requests for comment."
    • "He [Alan Dershowitz] called me a minute after I had emailed him for comment. He said he’d been friends with Epstein since 1996, when they were introduced at a party on Martha’s Vineyard by Lynn Forester de Rothschild. “She begged me to meet him. She told me, ‘here’s this smart academic.’” A few days later, Epstein invited Dershowitz to Les Wexner’s 59th birthday party at Wexner’s mansion in New Albany, Ohio. “It’s a tradition that Jeff invited the smartest person he met that year. He told them I was the smartest.” They remained close for years. Dershowitz strenuously denied ever participating in Epstein’s underage sex ring and said he’d only been in Epstein’s presence with his wife. “I got one massage!” he told me. “It was from a 50-year-old Russian woman named Olga. And I kept my shorts on. I didn’t even like it. I’m not a massage guy.”"
    • "How Epstein obtained his fortune is a matter of feverish speculation. His claim to a billionaire-only client list now seems laughable to the bankers I spoke with. One Wall Street source with direct knowledge of Epstein’s business said one source of Epstein’s income was providing “tax advice and estate planning” to rich clients, like Apollo Global Management founder Leon Black, presumably because Epstein had experience with offshore funds after basing his office in the Virgin Islands. In 2015 Black made a $10 million donation to Epstein’s foundation. (Black declined to comment.)"

Mr. Staley had good reason to maintain his relationship with Mr. Epstein, who received him at his Palm Beach office, where he had been permitted to serve some of his 13-month sentence in 2008 and 2009. Over the years, Mr. Epstein had funneled dozens of wealthy clients to Mr. Staley and his bank."

[...] Robert Maxwell died under suspicious circumstances in 1991 when he fell or was pushed overboard off his yacht, The Ghislaine. • New York Times, "Jeffrey Epstein’s Opaque Finances Could Become Focal Point for Investigators", 2019/08/11: "Deutsche Bank, where Mr. Epstein was a client from 2013 until June 2019, has been handing over transaction-by-transaction data to federal prosecutors and other authorities, according to two people familiar with the matter. One of those people, who was briefed on the bank’s internal review, said it appeared that Mr. Epstein was using his accounts for sex trafficking and possibly other illegal activity. [...] But the knottiest financial enigma involves Mr. Epstein’s relationship with Mr. Wexner, the chief executive of the apparel conglomerate L Brands, who for years entrusted Mr. Epstein with his financial life. [...] Mr. Wexner has said that he had severed ties with Mr. Epstein in late 2007, more than a year after Mr. Epstein was first charged with sexual misconduct with minors. [...] Two of Mr. Epstein’s longtime attorneys, Darren Indyke and Jeffrey Schantz, were involved with some of his trusts and other entities in New York and in the Virgin Islands, according to incorporation documents. [...] In a sign that the attorneys are bracing for government scrutiny of Mr. Epstein’s companies, Mr. Indyke and Mr. Schantz both recently hired criminal defense lawyers."

    • "He has also done work for Wexner and for the British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who has been accused in civil lawsuits of enabling Epstein’s exploitation of young girls. (She has not been criminally charged and denies wrongdoing.) Indyke also signed a deed that certified the sale of a Palm Beach home that had belonged to the late Arnold Paul Prosperi, an associate of Epstein’s who visited him frequently in jail."
    • "While Schantz’s name doesn’t appear prominently as the treasurer or vice president for any of Epstein’s known nonprofits, he was tied to one of the more unusual lawsuits against Epstein. The root of that 1996 lawsuit was an unorthodox real estate agreement between Epstein and the State Department. The State Department had seized an Upper East Side building from the Iranian government during that country’s revolution — and later rented it to Epstein for $15,000 a month, according to a New York Daily News account of the dispute."
    • "Epstein, in turn, sublet the building to Ivan Fisher, a well-known criminal defense attorney, for $20,000 a month, the Daily News reported. The U.S. government sued both Epstein and Fisher, claiming the sublet was illegal, and court records tie Schantz to the rental property.

      [...]

Later that year in October, Schantz wrote to Fisher, the subletter of the property, asking for payment, court records show. Fisher was a prominent criminal defense attorney who represented clients in the Pizza Connection — a case involving a massive 1980s heroin bust in New York— and a heroin dealers in “the French Connection” trials."
    • "The lawsuit suggests that Epstein was connected to James Baker III, who was secretary of state from 1989 to 1992 during the George H.W. Bush administration. At one point, according to court records, Schantz was asked, “Do you know how Mr. Epstein came to know Secretary of State James Baker?” to which he responded “No.”"

  • OK! Magazine, "Jeffrey Epstein Owned Colorado Ski Chalet That Sold For $24 Million In July" by Chris Spargo, 2020/11/17 (deed to the Colorado property at 375 Millcreek Circle in Vail CO): "Jeffrey Epstein had a massive real estate empire that included an apartment in Paris, two islands in the Caribbean, a Palm Beach mansion, a massive New York townhouse and a ranch in New Mexico. But OK! has obtained paperwork revealing these were not his only properties. One thing he kept secret was another — never-before-disclosed — sex chalet! In 1997, Epstein became an owner of a ski chalet in Vail, Colo., that just sold this past July — for $24 million. Documents show that the property was purchased in 1994 by Elizabeth Ross "Libet" Johnson, the great-granddaughter of the co-founder of Johnson & Johnson. She is one of those rare individuals who was known to be a client of Epstein, and a few years into their professional relationship, Epstein got Libet to make him an owner of her property."

Sex ring and blackmail

  • Excerpt from the 2009/08/07 deposition of Alfredo Rodriguez in Jeffrey Epstein v. Bradley J. Edwards, et. al. - mentions a technician from New Albany OH (the city where Les Wexner resided) coming in to maintain the video surveillance equipment at Epstein's home, which suggests that Les Wexner was in charge of a blackmail setup there akin to what Craig Spence did in Washington DC
  • Mirror, "Prince Andrew may have been secretly filmed with underage girl he is alleged to have abused", 2015/01/03: "Details buried in original court papers filed against pervert Jeffrey Epstein, 61, reveal that he recorded the sordid orgies he threw for VIPs at his luxury homes using cameras hidden in the walls of guest bedrooms. [...] Lawyers representing Roberts, originally referred to as Jane Doe 102, mentioned the hidden cameras in a 27-page filing at the Palm Beach Federal Courthouse in Florida. The six-year-old papers, seen by the Sunday People, state: “Some of the photographs in the defendant’s possession were taken with hidden cameras set up in [Epstein’s] home in Palm Beach. “On the Day of his arrest, police found two hidden cameras and photographs of underage girls on a computer in the defendant’s home. “[He] may have taken lewd photographs of Jane Doe 102 with his hidden cameras and transported [them] to his other residences and elsewhere.” [...] They add that Roberts’ claims that she was forced to tell Epstein all about her sexual encounters so he could use the information to “blackmail” the royal. She further claims she was sex-trafficked to “many other powerful men, including numerous prominent American politicians, powerful business executives, foreign presidents, a well known Prime Minister, and other world leaders”. Prosecutors believe Epstein, who enjoyed watching other people have sex, had cameras fitted at his other residences across the world. [...] Despite his friend’s 2008 conviction for child sex offences, Prince Andrew continued to see him and the pair were pictured together in Central Park, New York. The ensuing furore led to him quitting his role as Britain’s trade envoy."
  • Mirror, "Prince Andrew admits being 'foolish' after claims he slept with teenage sex slave", 2015/01/11: "Epstein’s chief pilot Larry Visoski, 54, has admitted he knew minors were being flown on his boss’s plane but said he never suspected him of having sex with them. [...] Mr Visoski has remained loyal to his employer. When confronted by the Mirror at Miami airport the pilot remained tight-lipped. Mr Visoski, a dad of one, was returning from the US Virgin Islands – 24 hours after he had deposited a middle-aged female visitor to Little St James, where his billionaire boss is believed to be hiding. When asked about his relationship with Epstein he replied: “I’ve nothing to say.” Asked about his questioning by lawyers about what took place on his flights, he said: “It’s private.” When asked further about Epstein’s alleged criminal offences, he ran to security and demanded police be called. [...] Said to be one of Epstein’s closest friends, Frenchman Brunel has remained one of the scandal’s most elusive figures. It is believed he was given £600,000 by Epstein to set up the New York-based MC2 modelling agency, a claim reportedly confirmed by his book-keeper – although he denied that in 2007. It has been alleged he lured minors with the promise of modelling contracts and then supplied them to Epstein for sex. [...] Brunel was asked to give testimony in the Roberts case but his attorney delayed it and then said Brunel had gone back to France and had no plans to return. However, according to the court papers, Brunel was staying with Epstein in Palm Beach during that period."
  • New York Magazine, "Real Hedge-Fund Managers Have Some Thoughts on What Epstein Was Actually Doing", 2019/07/11
    • "Long before Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty to prostitution charges in Florida more than a decade ago, his fellow Palm Beach resident and hedge-fund manager Douglas Kass was intrigued by the local gossip about his neighbor."
    • "Kass was well-connected on Wall Street, where he’d worked for decades, so he began to ask around. “I went to my institutional brokers, to their trading desks and asked if they ever traded with him. I did it a few times until the date when he was arrested,” he recalls. “Not one institutional trading desk, primary or secondary, had ever traded with Epstein’s firm.”"
    • "To begin with, there is much skepticism among the hedgies Intelligencer spoke with that Epstein made the money he has — and he appears to have a lot, given a lavish portfolio of homes and private aircraft — as a traditional money manager. A fund manager who knows well how that kind of fortune is acquired notes, “It’s hard to make a billion dollars quietly.” Epstein never made a peep in the financial world. Epstein was also missing another key element of a typical thriving hedge fund: investors. Kass couldn’t find any beyond Epstein’s one well-publicized client, retail magnate Les Wexner — nor could other players in the hedge-fund world who undertook similar snooping. “I don’t know anyone who’s ever invested in him; he’s never talked about by any of the allocators,” says one billionaire hedge-fund manager, referring to firms that distribute large pools of money among various funds."
    • "Given this puzzling set of data points, the hedge-fund managers we spoke to leaned toward the theory that Epstein was running a blackmail scheme under the cover of a hedge fund."
    • "Kass and former hedge-fund manager Whitney Tilson both emailed the thread around in investing circles and both quickly discovered that their colleagues found it quite convincing. “This actually sounds very plausible,” Tilson wrote in an email forwarding the thread to others."
    • "In the 2015 filing, Giuffre claimed that Epstein “debriefed her” after she was forced into sexual encounters so that he could possess “intimate and potentially embarrassing information” to blackmail friends into parking their money with him. She also said photographic and video evidence existed — an assertion that looms especially large now that federal investigators have found a trove of images in Epstein’s home safe."
  • New York Post, "Inside the Victoria’s Secret pipeline to Jeffrey Epstein", 2019/07/14
    • "In 2004, Elisabetta Tai was a 21-year-old Italian model with big dreams. A month after arriving in Manhattan, her booker gave her an Upper East Side address and told her he had set up a meeting with the man who would be able to get her a gig modeling for the Victoria’s Secret catalog. “He told me this is one of the most important people in modeling,” Tai told The Post. “He said that this man is in charge of Victoria’s Secret and he’s going to change your life.”"
    • "“I rang the doorbell of this incredible mansion, and a butler answered the door,” said Tai, who hails from Padova, a small town near Venice. “It was astonishing. It was a very beautiful house, and I saw about five models walking around as soon as I walked in. I was so excited.” Tai said she was greeted by a woman with “short black hair” who showed her into Epstein’s office. She doesn’t remember the woman’s name, although when The Post showed her a photograph of Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s gal pal, she confirmed that she looked like the same woman who met her at Epstein’s mansion."
    • "The woman with the short hair introduced Tai to Epstein, who was dressed casually in a shirt and jeans, she said. As Epstein started to ask her questions about her background, she noticed a massage table near his desk. [...] As Tai talked about her experience in halting English, she said Epstein moved to the massage table and began to remove his clothes. “I thought he was preparing to have a massage, and that someone was about to come in to the room and give him a massage,” she said. But Tai said she panicked when Epstein lay down naked on the table and told her to approach. He then handed her a vibrator, she said. “I froze,” she said. “I didn’t know what to do. “I just grabbed the vibrator and threw it at his head,” she said. “I mean, I don’t know where it landed, I just blacked out and then I ran as fast as I could out of the room.”"
    • "Epstein, who was an investor in a Manhattan modeling venture, has been accused by prosecutors of using his connections to the modeling company to “audition” girls to give him massages that often ended up in sexual abuse. “Over the years, it seems Epstein relied on …[the] modeling business to source underage girls for sex,” writes Conchita Sarnoff, an investigative reporter, in her book “Trafficking.”"
    • "A former Manhattan-based model agent, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, also alleged an Epstein-Victoria’s Secret pimp pipeline. “He [Epstein] portrayed himself as the back door to get a girl into Victoria’s Secret. Some of those girls got in,” he said."
    • "Another Manhattan model entrepreneur told The Post that Maxwell was a constant fixture at Victoria’s Secret events. “They were always these really trashy shows full of rich men in the audience,” he said. “Ghislaine acted as the kind of Nazi guard, telling everyone where they were sitting in the audience and that she had new ‘pop tarts’ which is what she called the young models.”"
  • Daily Beast, "Jeffrey Epstein Accuser Names Powerful Men in Alleged Sex Ring", 2019/08/09: "A young woman who says financier Jeffrey Epstein and socialite Ghislaine Maxwell kept her as a sex slave also accused a host of high-powered men of being involved in Epstein’s alleged sex-trafficking ring, according to court records unsealed Friday. Virginia Giuffre, who says that Epstein and Maxwell trafficked her to powerful people for erotic massages and sex, claimed in depositions in 2016 that Maxwell directed her to have sex with former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Britain’s Prince Andrew (whom she has accused before), wealthy financier Glenn Dubin, former senator George Mitchell, now-deceased MIT scientist Marvin Minsky, and modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel, as well as “another prince,” a "foreign president," a well-known prime minsiter" and the owner of a “large hotel chain” in France."

  • Palm Beach Post, "Clinton heads for Haiti to watch U.N. takeover", 1995/03/31 (pages 1, 12): "Along the presidential motorcade route, the traffic jams and blocked roads set off a few tempers. As a Palm Beach Gardens officer blocked the intersection, irritated motorists argued with the officer to let them through. "How dare he inconvenience all these people," one woman screamed before booing as the motorcade passed on its way to the Palm Beach home of Revlon tycoon Ron Perelman. Called Casa Apava, the home is one of the few on the island that reaches from the ocean to the Intracoastal. Joining Clinton for a three-hour dinner was a very select group of people, some of whom, according to one Democratic Party source, gave as much as $100,000 to the Democratic National Committee for the privilege of dining with the president. Among the guests: * Singer Jimmy Buffett, who was not on the original guest list but was added later. He may go to Haiti with Clinton and perform for troops. * Actor Don Johnson, best known for his role as a detective in the Miami Vice series. * Deandra Douglas, wife of actor Michael Douglas. * Sylvia Hassenfeld, active in Jewish causes who married into the founding family of Hasbro toys. * Jeffrey Epstein, a business executive. * Richard Garrett, a prominent Miami attorney. * Bob Kanuth, a business executive. * Alfonso Fanjul, a member of the Fanjul sugar-growing family. * Don Fowler, co-chairman of the Democratic National Committee. * Paul Prosperi, Clinton's Georgetown University school buddy and organizer of the dinner."
  • Gawker, "Flight Logs Put Clinton, Dershowitz on Pedophile Billionaire’s Sex Jet" by Nick Bryant, 2015/01/22 (flight logs)
    • "Clinton shared Epstein's plane with Kellen and Maxwell on at least 11 flights in 2002 and 2003—before any of the allegations against them became public—according to the pilots' logbooks, which have surfaced in civil litigation surrounding Epstein's crimes. In January 2002, for instance, Clinton, his aide Doug Band, and Clinton's Secret Service detail are listed on a flight from Japan to Hong Kong with Epstein, Maxwell, Kellen, and two women described only as "Janice" and "Jessica." One month later, records show, Clinton hopped a ride from Miami to Westchester on a flight that also included Epstein, Maxwell, Kellen, and a woman described only as "one female.""
    • "In 2002, as New York has reported, Clinton recruited Epstein to make his plane available for a week-long anti-poverty and anti-AIDS tour of Africa with Kevin Spacey, Chris Tucker, billionaire creep Ron Burkle, Clinton confidant Gayle Smith (who now serves on Barack Obama's National Security Council), and others. The logs from that trip show that Maxwell, Kellen, and a woman named Chauntae Davis joined the entourage for five days.

That last name—Chauntae Davies—shows up elsewhere in papers unearthed by the various investigations into Epstein's sex ring: his little black book. Davies is one of 27 women listed in the book under an entry for "Massage- California," one of six lists of massage girls Epstein kept in various locales, with a total of 160 names around the globe, many of them underage victims."

It was just two girls from New York,” she said. [...] Roberts denied she ever slept with Clinton and said she never witnessed him having sex with anyone else. [...] Official flight logs filed with the Federal Aviation Administration show Clinton traveled on some of the trips with as many as 10 U.S. Secret Service agents. However, on a five-leg Asia trip between May 22 and May 25, 2002, not a single Secret Service agent is listed. The U.S. Secret Service has declined to answer multiple Freedom of Information Act requests filed by FoxNews.com seeking information on these trips. Clinton would have been required to file a form to dismiss the agent detail, a former Secret Service agent told FoxNews.com. [...] "Mr. Epstein was part of the original group that conceived the Clinton Global Initiative, which is described as a project 'bringing together a community of global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges,” read the July 2007 letter to the U.S. Attorney’s office in the Southern District of Florida. [...] Epstein is not cited in official paperwork filed by the Clinton Global Initiative as a founder or director. Neither The Clinton Foundation nor Dershowitz responded to FoxNews.com’s inquiry as to the extent of Epstein’s involvement. [...] But Clinton has publicly credited longtime assistant Doug Band, now counselor and director of the foundation, as conceiving of the idea. Now, a Daily Beast investigation has uncovered ties between Epstein and the Clinton administration that date back to the president’s earliest days in the White House, casting doubt on the oft-circulated narrative that the two only began associating after Clinton left office. As early as 1993, records show, Epstein donated $10,000 to the White House Historical Association and attended a donors’ reception hosted by Bill and Hillary Clinton. Miami prosecution

  • "Perversion of Justice" series by Julie K. Brown in the Miami Herald published 2018/11/28
  • Miami Herald, "Federal prosecutors broke law in Jeffrey Epstein case, judge rules", 2019/02/21
    • "Federal prosecutors, under former Miami U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, broke the law when they concealed a plea agreement from more than 30 underage victims who had been sexually abused by wealthy New York hedge fund manager Jeffrey Epstein, a federal judge ruled Thursday."
    • "Marra, in a 33-page opinion, said prosecutors not only violated the Crime Victims’ Rights Act by not informing the victims, they also misled the girls into believing that the FBI’s sex trafficking case against Epstein was still ongoing — when in fact, prosecutors had secretly closed it after sealing the plea bargain from the public record."
    • "Marra, noting that he reviewed affidavits, depositions and interrogatories — presumably some of them sealed — showed “Epstein worked in concert with others to obtain minors not only for his own sexual gratification, but also for the sexual gratification of others, ’’ the judge said."
    • "Instead of prosecuting Epstein under federal sex trafficking laws, Acosta allowed Epstein to quietly plead guilty in state court to two prostitution charges and he served just 13 months in the Palm Beach County jail. His accomplices, some of whom have never been identified, were not charged."
    • "Acosta, who was nominated as labor secretary in 2017, issued a written statement through a spokesman:

““For more than a decade, the actions of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida in this case have been defended by the Department of Justice in litigation across three administrations and several attorneys general. The office’s decisions were approved by departmental leadership and followed departmental procedures. This matter remains in litigation and, thus, for any further comment we refer you to the Department of Justice.”"
    • "In an op-ed published Sunday in the Herald, Jeffrey H. Sloman, the former first assistant U.S. Attorney under Acosta during the Epstein case, defended their decision to give Epstein federal immunity. He claimed that many of the victims were too frightened to testify against Epstein.

He also noted that there were “significant legal impediments to prosecuting what was, at heart, a local sex case.’’

Marra suggested otherwise in his decision, saying: “Epstein and his co-conspirators knowingly traveled in interstate and international commerce to sexually abuse Jane Doe 1 and Doe 2 and others, [and] they committed violations of not only Florida law, but also federal law.‘’"
    • "The bulk of his opinion quoted emails exchanged during the tense negotiations between federal prosecutors and Epstein’s legal team, which included Roy Black, Jack Goldberger, Alan Dershowitz, Jay Lefkowitz and former Whitewater and Clinton prosecutor Kenneth Starr.

Those emails suggested ways in which both parties tried to keep Epstein’s victims in the dark, he said."
  • Politico, "Fresh court battle could expose more details in Acosta's controversial Epstein plea deal", 2019/03/06: "After the court ruling last month finding that federal prosecutors violated the rights of victims in the case, a White House spokeswoman said officials were “looking into” Acosta’s role. President Donald Trump, however, seemed to downplay the episode. “I really don’t know too much about it,” Trump told reporters. “I know he’s done a great job as Labor secretary. And that seems like a long time ago.” [...] The Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility has also opened an investigation into the matter."
  • Daily Beast, "Jeffrey Epstein’s Sick Story Played Out for Years in Plain Sight" by Vicky Ward, 2019/07/09
    • "Epstein’s name, I was told, had been raised by the Trump transition team when Alexander Acosta, the former U.S. attorney in Miami who’d infamously cut Epstein a non-prosecution plea deal back in 2007, was being interviewed for the job of labor secretary. The plea deal put a hard stop to a separate federal investigation of alleged sex crimes with minors and trafficking.

“Is the Epstein case going to cause a problem [for confirmation hearings]?” Acosta had been asked. Acosta had explained, breezily, apparently, that back in the day he’d had just one meeting on the Epstein case. He’d cut the non-prosecution deal with one of Epstein’s attorneys because he had “been told” to back off, that Epstein was above his pay grade. “I was told Epstein ‘belonged to intelligence’ and to leave it alone,” he told his interviewers in the Trump transition, who evidently thought that was a sufficient answer and went ahead and hired Acosta. (The Labor Department had no comment when asked about this.)"
    • "But much worse was to come from Epstein’s army of willfully blind lobbyists. In 2007 and 2008, as the FBI prepared a 53-page indictment that would charge Epstein with sex crimes, Epstein’s powerful legal team played the influence card.

After the one meeting with then-U.S. Attorney Acosta, where presumably “intelligence” was mentioned, the indictment was shelved and, instead, Epstein signed a non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors, pleading guilty to one count of solicitation of prostitution and one count of procurement of minors for prostitution, which earned him a cushy 13 months in county jail, from where he was allowed to leave to work at his office and go for walks."

Lawyer Brad Edwards said Epstein was allowed to have visitors while he was supposed to be working during the 13-month sentence. “It was not for some business arrangement and it was for... improper sexual contact,” Edwards said, adding that the new accusers said they were under 21, though they may not have been minors. “He just wasn’t in jail. He only slept there. He was in his office most of the day and what I can tell you he had visitors, female visitors,” Edwards said."

Book, a vocal advocate for child sexual assault survivors, said she also received more than a dozen calls from Bradshaw’s political supporters asking her to back off on her call for an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement into Bradshaw. [...] Book, in an interview with the Herald, said she had asked the Capitol police, who handle security for state lawmakers, to look into claims made on a Russian website alleging that Bradshaw was behind an effort to access her phone and emails by using the pretext of “imminent danger’’ to obtain her personal information. “I’ve received countless phone calls saying ‘Little girl you don’t know what you’re getting into,’ and telling me that I should just stop,’’ said Book, a child sexual abuse survivor herself who has worked to pass strict sex offender laws in Florida. WPTV Contact 5 uncovered that while Epstein was on work release, he was allowed to get picked up by his private driver, sometimes in a limo, and transported to his office in West Palm Beach. The sheriff's office said a deputy was not with him during that transport. WPTV also found, through deputy logs, that Epstein was taken to his home by deputies at least nine times, and was left in his home unsupervised for up to three hours sometimes, despite the fact that agency rules stated Epstein "is not to leave his designated workplace for any reason, with the exception of returning to the PBSO stockade, or for emergency medical treatment." However according to public records, both businesses have operated from addresses in a building on East 66th Street in Manhattan majority-owned by Epstein’s brother Mark, a wealthy property magnate. Two condominiums in the building sold last year for $2.5m and $1.85m."

And yet the outrage just was not there. After his absurdly soft jail time, Epstein carried on as before. He shamelessly wandered the streets of New York accompanied by startlingly young looking foreign women. People in his social set still tell me how “brilliant” he is and phone him for financial advice. A few years ago the journalist Michael Wolff wrote a profile of him for New York magazine that was meant to “rehabilitate” Epstein’s image and would tell of all the billionaires who still, secretly, hung out with Epstein. Marissa Hoechstetter says the controversial plea deal for the deranged doctor who allegedly abused her on the exam table, Robert Hadden, followed a pattern set by Epstein five years prior. In the Epstein case, Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Gaffney stunned a judge in 2011 by requesting that the multimillionaire perv be designated a “Level 1” sex offender because he had pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from one minor victim — though he’d faced accusations from many more women. Vance’s office has tried to explain the highly unusual request by saying that Gaffney made a mistake analyzing relevant legal standards. But in 2016 Gaffney — who remained deputy chief of the sex crimes unit — was part of a team of prosecutors that consented to a Level 1 sex offender status for Hadden. Around 20 victims had accused Hadden of vile abuse during examinations."

  • Idavox, "Mike Cernovich, Alan Dershowitz and the Jeffery Epstein Underage Sex Trafficking Case", 2017/03/09: "Unredacted information on the court document included the case number, 1:15-cv-07433-RWS. This case is better known as Giuffre V. Maxwell, and is a suit filed by a woman named Virginia Giuffre against British heiress Ghislane Maxwell, alleging that Maxwell acted as a facilitator and groomer for Jeffrey Epstein’s child prostitution enterprise, and that Maxwell was directly responsible for trafficking the then-underage Giuffre as an unwilling prostitute. Cernovich inserted himself into this case in January of 2017 when he made a motion to intervene and a motion to unseal previously sealed court documents and exhibits in this case. Cernovich’s claim is that his motion to unseal these items is a purely journalistic investigation, and that it was part of his “quest” to oppose pedophiles. This is, apparently, not the case. [...] According to the response in opposition to Cernovich’s motion to unseal, documents filed by Giuffre’s attorneys state that Cernovich is attempting to unseal documents that were sealed under an order intended to protect Giuffre. The opposition documents further state that Cernovich’s motion to unseal mirrored earlier motions to unseal filed by celebrity attorney and close personal friend Alan Dershowitz– who is also named as being involved with Epstein’s sex ring– and that Cernovich is acting as Dershowitz’s proxy. They also noted how Cernovich has been a pro-rape advocate, often using rhetoric favoring the targeting of rape victims, as well as Cernovich’s relationship with Dershowitz, most notably Dershowitz’s appearance in Cernovich’s movie “Silenced”. [...] Further investigation revelaed that Dershowitz filed a motion to intervene in August, 2016, and subsequently filed a motion to unseal the same documents as Cernovich later requested to unseal in 2017."
  • Politico, "Fresh court battle could expose more details in Acosta's controversial Epstein plea deal", 2019/03/06: "Giuffre’s attorney Paul Cassell, a former federal judge, told the three-judge panel that his client favored a “broad unsealing” of the records in a suit that Giuffre brought against Ghislaine Maxwell, an Epstein friend accused of helping procure girls for Epstein and others to engage in sexual activity. “It will demonstrate Epstein and Maxwell sexually trafficked her to Epstein’s friends, including Alan Dershowitz,” Cassell told the court. “She wants all the documents unsealed substantively.” [...] “Are you saying Mr. Dershowitz [came up] in other documents?” Judge Rosemary Pooler asked at one point. “Absolutely, absolutely,” Cassell replied. Dershowitz’s attorney Andrew Celli pleaded with the court to “immediately” release three documents that he contends will demonstrate that Giuffre is lying about having had sex with Dershowitz. [...] And while Dershowitz greeted various observers and journalists, he rebuffed a handshake offered by Miami Herald reporter Julie Brown, whose series on the handling of Epstein’s prosecution recently won a prestigious George Polk Award. In addition to Giuffre, a court transcript released Nov. 7 shows that another Epstein accuser, Sarah Ransome, alleged she was directed to have sex with the Harvard professor, who socialized with Epstein before becoming his lawyer. Dershowitz says records produced during the civil litigation — but still under seal — will show both women to be serial fabricators who have repeatedly lied about him and others and whose stories are often so outlandish that they cannot possibly be true. [...] Dershowitz is still fuming that Giuffre’s lawyers included her allegation against him in a court filing in 2014 that was first discovered and published by POLITICO. He retained former FBI Director Louis Freeh to investigate the claims. Freeh said evidence “directly contradicted” several of the accusations against him."
  • Politico, "Mystery parties seek secrecy in Jeffrey Epstein-related suit", 2019/03/20: "Just prior to a court-imposed deadline Tuesday, two anonymous individuals surfaced to object to the unsealing of a key lower-court ruling in the case, as well as various submissions by the parties. Both people filed their complaints in the New York-based 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, which is overseeing the case. The two people said they could face unwarranted speculation and embarrassment if the court makes public records from the suit, in which Virginia Giuffre, an alleged Epstein victim, accused longtime Epstein friend Ghislaine Maxwell of engaging in sex trafficking by facilitating his sexual encounters with teenage girls. [...] Three different parties asked Sweet to unseal records in the case: Harvard law professor and former Epstein lawyer Alan Dershowitz — a prominent Trump defender — filmmaker and far-right social media personality Mike Cernovich and the Miami Herald. Dershowitz said he wanted several records released to disprove and discredit allegations two women have made that they had sex with Dershowitz at Epstein’s direction. Dershowitz has categorically denied the allegations. Cernovich said the far-ranging secrecy in the case undermined efforts to expose sexual trafficking by American elites. The Miami Herald sought to open all records in the suit as part of a series on Epstein it was preparing and ultimately published last year. [...] Maxwell indicated in papers filed by her lawyers Tuesday that she continues to oppose any unsealing."
  • Miami Herald, "At first, Dershowitz welcomed this Epstein-related lawsuit. Now he wants it tossed out", 2019/06/27: "Virginia Roberts Giuffre, now 35, claimed in court documents that between 2000 and 2002, she was trafficked by Epstein to have sex with a number of powerful men, including Dershowitz, who was Epstein’s friend and lawyer. [...] Earlier this year, Dershowitz gave a series of media interviews, sometimes taunting Giuffre and Boies with his accusations, and daring them to sue him for defamation, saying he would relish the chance to face them in court. Giuffre accepted the challenge and filed a defamation complaint in April in federal court in the Southern District of New York. “I welcome this lawsuit because everything in the complaint is false and I will be able to disprove all of this in a court of law,’’ Dershowitz told the Miami Herald in April. Now Dershowitz appears to have reconsidered — or, some experts say, is simply exercising a brilliant legal maneuver that places him once again in front of TV cameras — where he can continue to mount his legal battle in the court of public opinion. [...] Dershowitz has said he can prove that both of his accusers are lying, and he said Boies knows their statements are false. As evidence, he played for reporters a phone conversation between him and Boies, of poor quality, in which Boies seems to acknowledge that his client might be confused or mistaken. Boies has said the recording was made without his permission, merges multiple calls into one and is deceptively edited. Dershowitz said the motive for falsely accusing him was to pressure Wexner to pay hush money so that Wexner would not be similarly tarred by Giuffre. But Giuffre has never publicly named Wexner as among those she was directed to have sex with and, in the lawsuit, she said neither she nor her lawyers have ever demanded or received money from Wexner."
  • Miami Herald, "Court to unseal up to 2,000 pages of Jeffrey Epstein-related documents", 2019/07/03: "In its decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled that a lower district court erred when it issued a blanket sealing of the case, which essentially allowed all the parties to file everything under wraps. “The District Court failed to review the documents individually and produce ‘specific, on‐the‐record findings that sealing is necessary to preserve higher values.’ Instead, the District Court made generalized statements about the record as a whole. This ... was legal error,’’ said Judge Jose A. Cabranes, writing for the three-member panel. [...] Dershowitz says that there are documents in the Maxwell file that will prove that Giuffre has wrongly accused him. “When the materials are unsealed, the public will see the evidence in my accuser’s own words that prove I was framed to get money, and that I am totally innocent, as I have consistently asserted since the day I was falsely accused,’’ Dershowitz said in a statement."
  • Miami Herald, "Dershowitz v. Boies: Jeffrey Epstein case unleashes war between two legal Goliaths", 2019/07/05: "Dershowitz, in a statement to the Miami Herald, asserts that the lawyers’ affidavits are suspect since most of the attorneys are either members of Boies’ firm or beholden to Boies. “All the lawyers who have filed accusatory affidavits are Boies partners, former partners [who] depend on Boies referrals, or co-counsel with Boies who share contingency fees. None is in any way independent,’’ Dershowitz said in an email Thursday. Among the affidavits is one filed by Stanley Pottinger, a former U.S. assistant attorney general for civil rights who is now a principal in Edwards Pottinger, a firm in New York and Fort Lauderdale that specializes in sex abuse cases involving women and children. Pottinger, who represented Giuffre in 2014, said it was he who enlisted Boies to assist in her case because he predicted that Giuffre would become a target of vicious attacks by powerful and wealthy men she had identified as having sex with her under Epstein’s direction. [...] The lawsuits continued, with Giuffre suing Maxwell in 2015, also for defamation. As part of that case, another woman, Sarah Ransome, came forward, claiming that Epstein and Maxwell also directed her to have sex with Dershowitz against her will when she was 22 years and being trafficked by the couple. Dershowitz by then was accusing Boies and McCawley of extortion, claiming that they were part of the team of lawyers that concocted a plot to extort money from Wexner — another claim that Boies denies. [...] Dershowitz has nevertheless continued to publicize his theory about Wexner. In court documents, he has cited another prominent man, Nathan Myhrvold, 55, the former chief of technology of Microsoft. Dershowitz theorizes that Giuffre has mistaken Dershowitz for Myhrvold, because, he says, Myhrvold looks similar. (Myhrvold has red hair, a beard and glasses.) The Herald has been unsuccessful in reaching Myhrvold for comment. Myhrvold was among those in Epstein’s circle of prominent friends who often dined at Epstein’s palatial Manhattan home, according to a 2011 Vanity Fair article."

He presented Mr. Boies with an account of his whereabouts during the period that Ms. Giuffre alleged she was abused by Mr. Epstein. He said he had records showing he couldn’t have been in the same place at the same time as Ms. Giuffre. “I was initially very impressed with the representations he made,” Mr. Boies said. Mr. Boies said his firm began uncovering material that cast doubt on Mr. Dershowitz’s account, including flight logs from Mr. Epstein’s plane that Mr. Boies said contradicted Mr. Dershowitz’s claims that he never traveled without his wife. Talks collapsed in late 2015."
